Ladies and gentlemen,
welcome to the 12th International Intellectual Property Protection Conference,
which celebrates its 12th anniversary this year.
A few days ago, President Biden of United States visited Korea.
On the very first day, he visited the semiconductor plant of Samsung Electronics
in Pyeongtaek. Also, before returning to the USA, he met with
the Chairman of Hyundai Motors. The press reported that the two countries
have formed a solid technological alliance. This visit to Korea indicated
a clear example of the importance of technology, or intellectual property,
in international politics.
In recent international politics, the term “Tech-politics” is drawing much attention.
Tech-politics view the technological superiority as the key variable
that determines political hegemony. The recent, fierce competition between
the United States and China for innovative technologies such as
semiconductors is a good example of the term, “tech-politics”.
However, developing technology does not automatically guarantee
that a country can become a technology powerhouse. Protecting technologies
is just as important as developing them. The crucial act of protecting
the hard-earned technologies can induce innovation. In other words,
intellectual property protection can act as the driving force behind innovation.
The new government of Yoon, Suk Yeol announced its pledge to leap forward
as one of the top 5 science and technology powerhouses of the world.
Rigorous intellectual property protection will be the foundation behind the leap forward.
Accordingly, the theme of today's conference is " A Leading Nation in Science
and Technology… Inquiry about the Path of Intellectual Property”
In addition, we expect active discussions to take place at today's conference
regarding the intellectual property protection legislation. Patent attorneys
in patent litigations will take part in the discussion
Ladies and gentleman,
We refer to the 21st century as ‘The Digital Era’. In the past,
we explored the world on a ship in search of the New World. Now, this is an era
in which countries with artificial intelligence (AI) or Metaverse technologies are
pioneering a new digital continent. I have no doubt that Korea has satisfied
enough conditions to become a powerhouse in The Digital Era.
I hope that today's conference will help Korea build on the foundation
necessary to become a strong country in the future.
I would like to introduce some of our precious participants of the conference..
