Introduction 

This year will be a critical juncture in intellectual property for Korea, to take a 

leap forward to become an IP powerhouse.

The global devastation caused by COVID-19 brought existential threats 

to industries overall, initiating conversations on the issues about sustainability. 

Among the changes brought by the virus, a case in point is the transition into 

an “Untact,” or contactless society, which enables us to perform same tasks 

without contact.

The “Untact” era is causing an enormous upheaval in the digital environment. 

In the workplace, new types of work are emerging with demands of higher 

precision and efficiency in existing tasks. Thus, in the coming future, global 

industrial competitiveness will depend on the intellectual property sectors 

that include Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI). 

As a member of IP5, a forum of the five largest intellectual property offices 

of advanced nations including the United States, China, Japan, and Europe, 

Korea is expected to be a test bed for innovative growth in order to take a leap 

forward in strengthening the technological capacities for digital intellectual 

properties in the future.

As convergence between societies and business sectors is being accelerated, 

the importance of technologies utilizing AI and other digital intellectual properties 

is growing day by day. As a result, The success or failure in global competition 

will depend on possession and management of digital intellectual property. 

Protecting and utilizing domestic intellectual properties will be the core capabilities 

in raising national competitiveness.

For the future of Korea’s intellectual property sector, 

the Financial News and Korea Intellectual Property Office host 

the 11th International Intellectual Property & Industrial Security Conference 

on June 10th, 2021 at the Grand Ballroom of the Westin Josun Hotel 

in Sogong-ro, Seoul.

Great scholars from home and abroad will come together under the theme of 

“Intellectual Properties in the “Untact” Era: the Role and the Opportunity.” 

The conference will provide an opportunity to listen to their insights on 

the protective measures for AI, Big Data, and other digital intellectual properties 

and the intellectual property sectors that utilize such measures.
