Distinguished guests from Korea and elsewhere,
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Sixth Seoul International Derivatives Securities
Conference, which is being hosted jointly by the Korea Exchange and the Financial News.
The Financial News launched this conference in 2003, as it recognized in advance the importance of
derivatives securities. Up until then, the general public lacked understanding about derivatives securities
or had a negative perception of them.
This year’s conference deals with “The hedge fund market following the subprime mortgage crisis and
green finance.” With uncertainties lingering in the U.S. financial market, scholars from Korea and elsewhere
will engage in clear-cut analysis of the changes facing the hedge fund market, which is closely related
with derivative securities, and suggest solutions. Scholars will also hold heated debate about how investors
will perceive investment in environment-related fields, including greenhouse gas emissions, which have
become a common challenge facing all of humanity.
I hope that the conference will present a clear vision for the future to the countless people engaged in the
financial industry.
Thank you.

The Financial News
Honored guests, ladies and gentlemen,
I welcome all of you to the Sixth Seoul International Derivatives Securities Conference.
The event, which is being hosted jointly by the Korea Exchange and the Financial News, has become the
best derivatives conference in Asia, amid enthusiastic attention from financiers in Korea and elsewhere.
For the theme of this year’s conference, we chose, “The hedge fund market following the subprime
mortgage crisis and green finance,” a very timely issue. In other words, we will focus both on “The state of
the hedge fund market in the wake of the subprime mortgage crisis,” and the emerging “green finance”
market
.
As you are well aware, the global economy is mired in a chaotic situation stemming from the U.S. subprime
mortgage debacle. It is true that many derivatives securities, in which hedge funds invest, are embroiled
in financial market uncertainties. This conference will serve as a great opportunity for participants to
examine the current situation of derivatives securities and hedge funds that are undergoing a transition
period. At the same time, the event will offer a chance to better understand derivatives securities and
hedge funds, which are essential to the development of the financial industry in Korea, ahead of the
effectuation of the Capital Market Consolidation Act set for next year.
“Green finance” is the centerpiece of environmentally friendly green growth, encompassing the global focus
on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon emission rights are widely traded in Europe, while countries
around the world are stepping up efforts to establish a low carbon society. The Korean government also
plans to develop the green industry as a growth engine for the future. As a result, the nation’s first carbon
fund decided to invest in the solar power generation business, as green finance is taking off as a sweeping
trend in the country. Green finance,
which caters to the needs of the modern age, surely possesses unlimited growth potential.
The two-day conference will consist of lectures by distinguished scholars and discussions. I sincerely hope
that all participants will find the conference to be most rewarding and productive.
Thank you.
