Distinguished Guests,
This year is the 19th anniversary of the Seoul International Finance Forum hosted by
the Financial News. It is my great honor to extend a very warm welcome to all the guest at
the Asia’s best finance forum, both in name and reality. I would like especially to extend
my sincere gratitude to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and
Finance Mr. Kim Dong-Yeon. Thank you very much, Mr. Deputy Prime Minister.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The World renowned physicist Stephen Hawking died recently left many famous quotes
together with remarkable achievements. “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change”
is included in a list of his quotes. It means that a smart person is able to adapt quickly to
various situations.
Although it is a story of the physicist, I think it is a phrase that even financiers
living in 21st century should listen carefully.
Yes, it is. The finance of today is changing faster than any other industries.
These days, it is hard to find many people who deposit money in a bank.
AI robo-advisors are handling matters instead of fund managers at securities companies.
Where will the traditional finance be placed in this era? What will the finance look like in future?
The Financial News has decided “New Horizon, New Challenges” for this year’s finance forum
theme, with the awareness of such issues. We have guest speakers who have gone deep
into the study of financial future.
Today’s keynote speaker Mr. David Yermack, a professor at Stern Business School of
New York University, four years ago, offered a regular course on the virtual currency and
block chain for the first time in the world and is a pioneer of this field.
Two years ago he also gave a fintech MBA course at the business school. Not long ago,
the whole world including Korea was in the grip of virtual currency fever.
The truth of what the virtual currency is about is controversial both at home and abroad.
I am so thrilled an excited that today’s forum will provide a clear answer to it.
After the keynote speech, great scholars and specialists in the global financial community
will continue in-dept lectures and discussions about present and future of the finance.
I have no doubt that today’s forum will guide development of Korea’s future finance.
The forum will continue until tomorrow. The Financial News will put more effort into
this forum which makes all the guests feel that their participation in this forum would be time
well spent. Also we will see that our guests are well treated. Once again I must thank everyone for
your support, and wish all of you good health and luck.
Thank you.
