Phil Gramm
Senior Advisor to UBS/US Former Senator

Senator Gramm is Senior Partner of US Policy Metrics and a Senior Advisor UBS Investment Bank. He served as Vice Chairman of UBS Investment Bank from December 2002 to December 2011. At UBS he provided senior leadership in such landmark IPOs as Visa, the Bank of China, the China Merchants Bank and LGPhillips in Korea. He was instrumental in the follow-on equity offering for the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the privatization of Telstra in Australia and the sale of 20% of Akbank in Turkey to Citibank. 

Senator Gramm served six years in the US House and eighteen years in the US Senate. His legislative record includes landmark bills like the Gramm-Latta Budget, which reduced federal spending, rebuilt national defense and mandated the Reagan tax cut, and the Gramm-Rudman Act, which placed the first binding constraints on federal spending. As Chairman of the Banking Committee, Senator Gramm steered through legislation modernizing banking, insurance and securities law, which had been languishing in Congress for 60 years. The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act allowed banks, securities firms and insurance companies to affiliate as part of a Financial Services Holding Company. Dodd-Frank did not repeal Gramm-Leach-Bliley but, instead, expanded it by requiring systemically significant non-banks to become Financial Services Holding Companies.

Phil Gramm holds a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in economics, the subject he taught at Texas A&M University for 12 years. He has published numerous articles and books on subjects ranging from monetary theory and policy to private property and the economics of mineral extraction. 

He is married to Dr. Wendy Lee Gramm, former Chairman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission under Presidents Reagan and Bush. They have two sons, Marshall and Jeff, and five grandchildren, Caroline, Will, Joshua, Gilbert and Benjamin.
 
 
Liqing Zhang
Dean/School of Finance, Central University of Finance & Economics

Professor of International Economics; Dean of School of Finance and Director of Center for International Finance Studies at Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE) in Beijing, China.

Liqing Zhang is author, coauthor or editor of numerous publications on international economics and finance issues, particularly in the areas of capital flows, exchange rate, financial development and economic globalization. Holding a Ph.D. degree in Economics in Renmin University of China, he was senior visiting fellows at World Bank (1995), Tilburg University (1996), Peterson Institute for International Economics (2004) and Columbia University sponsored by the Fulbright Foundation (2005), and Australia National University (2009). He is the vice president of China Society of World Economy. He has advised many governmental departments in China, including People’s Bank of China and State Administration of Foreign Exchange over the past decades, and served as the member of Approval Committee of Listed Companies with China Securities Regulation Commission.
 
 
Ayaz Ebrahim
CIO/Amundi Hong Kong

Mr. Ayaz Ebrahim joined Amundi Hong Kong Limited in May 2011 as CIO Asia ex-Japan Equities and Deputy Chief Executive Officer. Prior to joining the company, he was the Chief Investment Officer, Asia Pacific, for both HSBC Global Asset Management and Deutsche Asset Management. From 1991 to 2002, he worked at Crédit Agricole Asset Management Hong Kong (now named Amundi Hong Kong Limited), initially as an investment manager and subsequently as Chief Investment Officer for Asia. Prior to that, he was an analyst at Hoare Govett (1990-1991) and at Barclays De Zoete Wedd (1989-1990). He began his career as an executive in the Listing Division of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Mr. Ebrahim holds a Doctorate Degree in Civil Law (DCL) and a Bachelor of Science Degree (Hons) in Accountancy from the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom.

Jae-Hoon Yoo
Chairman & CEO/Korea Securities Depository

Mr. Jaehoon Yoo was appointed Chairman and CEO of Korea Securities Depository in November 2013. Prior to this post, he served as Commissioner of the Securities and Futures Commission from April 2012, as Director General of the Treasury Bureau at the Ministry of Strategy and Finance from December 2009 to March 2011 and as Spokesperson for the Financial Services Commission from 2008 to 2009.

From 1997 to 2000, he worked as an economist at the Asian Development Bank in Manila. He was also a senior securities market specialist at the World Bank and International Finance Corporation between 2005 and 2008. During his 30 year career in public service, he worked on a variety of projects related to capital market development, financial policy, and international aid for developing countries. 

He has a BA in economics and an MA in public administration from Seoul National University, and an MA (DEA) in international economics at Sciences-Po de Paris. He also graduated from the École Nationale d’Administration (ENA) in France. He obtained a Ph.D. in economics from Kyonggi University in 2011. 

He is an honorary member of the French Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He also currently serves as Founding Chair of the China Capital Market Society, which was established in 2009 to conduct studies on the Chinese capital market and promote private-sector cooperation between Korea and China’s capital markets. 

He has been involved in community services, including the “Global Overseas Adoptees Link (GOAL)”, which assists Korean international adoptees with locating their birth parents, and the “Working NK Refugees”, which provides financial education and job training to North Korean defectors living in South Korea.
 
 
Michael Jaewuk Chin
Head/UBS Hana Asset Management, Korea

Michael Chin is Head of UBS Hana Asset Management, the joint venture with Hana Financial Group in Korea, since January 2010. Prior to this appointment, Michael was responsible for managing UBS Investment Bank’s Asian equity brokerage business as Head of Asian Equity Sales and was a member of Global Cash Management Committee, based in Hong Kong. Before this, he was Branch Manager and Head of Equities in Taiwan, having transferred from his position as Head of Korean Equities and Securities Branch Manager in Korea.

Before joining UBS in 1997, Michael held a number of finance-related positions at Lehman Brothers, Schroders and Credit Suisse in New York, Seoul and Hong Kong.

Michael graduated with a BA degree in International Relations from University of Virginia, USA.
 
 
Richard Koo
Chief Economist/Nomura Research Institute

Mr. Richard C. Koo is the Chief Economist of Nomura Research Institute, with responsibilities to provide independent economic and market analysis to Nomura Securities, the leading securities house in Japan, and its clients. Before joining Nomura in 1984, Mr. Koo, a US citizen, was an economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (1981-84). Prior to that, he was a Doctoral Fellow of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System (1979-81). In addition to conducting financial market research, he has also advised several Japanese prime ministers on how best to deal with Japan's economic and banking problems. 

In addition to being one of the first non-Japanese to participate in the making of Japan’s 5-year economic plan, he was also the only non-Japanese member of the Defense Strategy Study Conference of the Japan Ministry of Defense for 1999-2011. Currently he is serving as a Senior Advisor to Center for Strategic and International Studies (Washington D.C.). He is also an Advisory Board Member of Institute for New Economic Thinking (N.Y.C.), and a regular contributor to Economics by Invitation, The Economist (http://www.economist.com/economics).

Author of many books on Japanese economy, his latest book “The Holy Grail of Macroeconomics - Lessons from Japan’s Great Recession” (John Wiley & Sons, 2008) has been translated into and sold in four different languages.

Mr. Koo holds BAs in Political Science and Economics from the University of California at Berkeley (1976), and MA in Economics from the Johns Hopkins University (1979). From 1998 to 2010, Mr. Koo was a visiting professor at Waseda University in Tokyo. 

In financial circles, Mr. Koo was ranked 1st among over 100 economists covering Japan in the Nikkei Financial Ranking for 1995, 1996 and 1997, and by the Institutional Investor magazine for 1998. He was also ranked 1st by Nikkei Newsletter on Bond and Money for 1998, 1999 and 2000. He was awarded the Abramson Award by the National Association for Business Economics (Washington D.C.) for the year 2001. Mr. Koo, a native of Kobe, Japan, is married with two children.
 
 
Jim Walker
Founder & Chief Economist/Asianomics Group Limited

Between 1991 and 2007 Dr Jim was Chief Economist at CLSA, where he was regularly voted ‘best regional economist’ in Asiamoney, Institutional Investor and Greenwich surveys. 
Dr Jim is a key speaker at major economic conferences and a presenter at global investment forums. He regularly airs his hard-hitting views on economic issues and policies on TV, notably on CNBC, Thomson Reuters and Bloomberg. Note that clients always hear his views weeks in advance of any media appearances. 

Before moving to Asia, Dr Jim worked as an economist with The Royal Bank of Scotland and was an economic researcher at the Fraser of Allander Institute in his native Scotland, where he also gained a Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree and a Doctorate in Economics from Strathclyde University, Glasgow.
 
 
Naohiko Baba
Chief Japan Economist/Goldman Sachs Japan Co., Ltd

Naohiko is the chief Japan economist, responsible for economic and market analysis of the region. He joined Goldman Sachs as a managing director in January 2011.
Prior to joining the firm, Naohiko worked at the Bank of Japan (BOJ) for 19 years, beginning his career there in 1992. From 2006 to 2007, Naohiko was the head of Money Markets and Fixed Income in the Financial Markets Department, where he led a team of economists in providing BOJ board members with inputs for monetary policy meetings. He left BOJ in late 2007 and returned in late 2009, serving as head of the Financial System Research Group in the Financial System and Bank Examination Department. Naohiko was the main author of BOJ’s semi-annual Financial System Report. 

From 2007 to 2009, Naohiko worked at the Bank of International Settlement (BIS) in Basel, Switzerland. As a senior economist of global financial markets, he prepared inputs for high-level central bank conferences, as well as for BIS publications. Naohiko also investigated the US dollar shortage and its relation to the foreign exchange swap market during the global financial crisis of 2007 to 2008, publishing articles stimulating worldwide discussions on the effectiveness of the Federal Reserve swap lines. 
Throughout his career, Naohiko has published numerous academic and policy-oriented articles on topics including interbank money market conditions during quantitative easing in Japan, the yen yield curve, corporate finance, and hedge-fund behavior. 
Naohiko earned a PhD in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1999 and an MA from Keio University in 1992.
 
 
John Jung-Gun Oh
Co-President/Asia Finance Society

John Junggun OH is currently Senior Visiting Research Fellow of Korea Economic Research Institute (KERI) and Co-President, Asia Finance Society (AFS). He was formerly Professor of Economics, Korea University, Seoul, Korea, and President, Korea International Finance Association (KIFA). 

Before joining Korea University in 2009, he worked as Director of Research, South East Asian Central Banks (SEACEN), and Director General of the Bank of Korea where he has served for 30 years. He was also a Visiting Fellow, The IFO Institute for Economic Research, Munich, Germany, and has been an external consultant, UN ESCAP (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific). 
He published numerous books including East Asian Cooperation for the Regional Trade Settlement System, Roles of Financial and Monetary Stabilities for Fiscal Soundness, Asian Bond Markets and Financial Investment Companies’ Business Strategies, Post-Global Financial Crisis East Asian Monetary and Financial Cooperation, Global Currency Wars and Choices of East Asia, The Korean Economy: Post-Crisis Policies, Issues and Prospects, The Financial Crisis and Financial and Monetary Policies, He also published numerous articles including Post-Crisis Regional Financial Architecture in East Asia for New International Financial System, Systemic Crisis and Macroprudential Regulations, Yuan Internationalization, Key Currency Disputes and Korean Strategies, Exchange Rate Coordination in East Asia.

He graduated with a Ph. D in Economics from University of Manchester. His main research interests are in the areas of monetary and financial policies, financial crisis, international finance, East Asian monetary cooperation and the Korean Economy.
 
 
Sung-Wook Park
Director/Macroeconomic & International Finance Division, Korea Institute of Finance (KIF)

Research Fellow and Director of Macroeconomic & International Finance Division at the Korea Institute of Finance. Park’s main fields of interest are macroeconomics and international finance. Prior to joining the Institute, he worked at the Bank of Korea from 1994 to 2009. He received his BA from Seoul National University, and his MA and PhD. in economics from the Ohio State University. The title of his PhD thesis is "Three Essays on Long Run Movements of Real Exchange Rates" (2007).

Park co-authored “KIF Financial Conditions Index (the KIF report 2011)”, “The Impact of the Changing Demographic Structure on Portfolio Investment and Its Policy Implications (the KIF research report 2013-04) as well as the Finance VIP Series, “Introducing a Financial Stability Contribution (Bank Levy) & Its Policy Implications.”
 
 
Victor Cha
Senior Advisor and Korea Chair/Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS)

Victor Cha joined CSIS in May 2009 as a senior adviser and the inaugural holder of the Korea Chair. He is also director of Asian studies and holds the D.S. Song-KF Chair in the Department of Government and School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. From 2004 to 2007, he served as director for Asian affairs at the White House on the National Security Council (NSC), where he was responsible primarily for Japan, the Korean peninsula, Australia/New Zealand, and Pacific Island nation affairs. Dr. Cha was also the deputy head of delegation for the United States at the Six-Party Talks in Beijing and received two Outstanding Service Commendations during his tenure at the NSC. He is the award-winning author ofAlignment Despite Antagonism: The United States-Korea-Japan Security Triangle (Stanford University Press, 1999), winner of the 2000 Ohira Book Prize;Nuclear North Korea: A Debate on Engagement Strategies, with Dave Kang (Columbia University Press, 2004);Beyond the Final Score: The Politics of Sport in Asia (Columbia University Press, 2009); andThe Impossible State: North Korea, Past and Future (Ecco, 2012), selected by Foreign Affairs magazine as a 2012 “Best Book on Asia and the Pacific.” His next book is Powerplay: Origins of the American Alliance System in Asia (Princeton University Press, forthcoming). He has written articles on international relations and East Asia in journals includingForeign Affairs, International Security, Political Science Quarterly,Survival, International Studies Quarterly, and Asian Survey.

Dr. Cha is a former John M. Olin National Security Fellow at Harvard University, a two-time Fulbright Scholar, and a Hoover National Fellow, CISAC Fellow, and William J. Perry Fellow at Stanford University. He holds Georgetown University’s Dean’s Teaching Award for 2010 and the Distinguished Research Award for 2011. He serves as an independent consultant and has testified before Congress on Asian security issues. He has been a guest analyst for various media including CNN, ABCNightline, NBC Today Show, CBS Morning Show, Fox News, MSNBC, CNBC, BBC, ESPN,Sports Illustrated, and National Public Radio. He has a cameo role (as himself) in the upcoming action film “Red Dawn” (Contrafilm, MGM, Vincent Newman Entertainment) scheduled for release in November 2012. Dr. Cha holds a B.A., an M.I.A., and a Ph.D. from Columbia University, as well as an M.A. from Oxford University.
 
 
John Delury
Assistant Professor/Graduate School of International Studies(GSIS), Yonsei University

John Delury is an assistant professor at Yonsei University's Graduate School of International Studies and Underwood International College, where he chairs the IS major. His main research focus is modern Chinese history, and he is the author, with Orville Schell, of Wealth and Power: China’s Long March to the Twenty-First Century (Random House, 2013). He also closely follows Korean Peninsula affairs and Northeast Asian relations, and has visited North Korea four times in the past five years. Recent articles have appeared in Asian Perspective, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, 38 North and Yale Global, and his commentary and analysis appears regularly in media outlets such as The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Economist, CNN, etc. He is a senior fellow of the Asia Society US-China Center, term member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and member of the National Committee on North Korea. He previously taught at Brown, Columbia, and Peking Universities, and was associate director of Asia Society's Center on US-China Relations in New York. John received his BA and PhD in history from Yale University.
 
 
Byung-Yeon Kim
Professor/Department of Economics, Seoul National University

Byung-Yeon Kim is Professor in Department of Economics, Seoul National University (SNU) and Vice Director of Institute for Peace and Unification Studies at SNU. His research interests lie in the fields of transition economics and applied econometrics, in particular with reference to North Korea as well as former socialist countries. He received B.A. and M.A. from Seoul National University, and D.Phil. from the University of Oxford. He has held faculty positions at University of Essex and Sogang University. He has been a visiting researcher at University of California at Berkeley, Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars, Bank of Finland Institute of Transition Economies, and Institute of Transition Period in Moscow, Hitotsubashi University, Kyoto University, and elsewhere. He published numerous articles in international journals such as Journal of Comparative Economics, British Journal of Political economy, Economics of Transition, Journal of Economic History, Economic History Review, and Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics. He wrote more than a dozen of book chapters, books, and journal articles on the North Korean economy. He has been awarded with T. S. Ashton Prize (Economic History Society), Chungram Award (Korean Economic Association) and Distinguished Researcher in Humanities and Social Sciences of Rep. of Korea (National Research Foundation). He had been a member of National Economic Advisory Council (2011-2012) and is currently a member of Policy Advisory Committee for Ministry of Unification and Evaluation Committee for Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
 
 
Suk Lee
Research Fellow/Korea Development Institute (KDI)

Dr. Suk Lee is a research fellow at Korea Development Institute (KDI). He received his BA and MA in economics from Seoul National University and his PhD in economics from the University of Warwick, England. He served as an intelligence analyst at ROK National Security Planning Agency (currently National Information Service), and also worked for Korea Institute for National Unification as the director of the Information Center for Unification Studies. Dr. Lee has worked on the DPRK economy, especially on the DPRK economic structure, foreign trade, food crisis, demographic change, and recent economic reform and changes. His most recent publications include Economic Foundation of North-South Korean Integration: Model, Issues and Policy Implications (Seoul: KDI, 2013, in Korean), Strategic Economic Cooperation with North Korea: Concept and Policy Implications(Seoul: KDI, 2013, in Korean), ROK Economic Sanction and DPRK Foreign Trade: Changing Relation Between DPRK-China Trade and Inter-Korean Trade (Seoul: KDI, 2013, in Korean),and A Study of Inter-Korean Economic Integration: Strategies and Policy Issues for Economic Reform and Transition in North Korea(Seoul: KDI, 2012, in Korean).
